Description
The name "maral" comes from a species of deer native to the region between the Caspian and Black Seas. This species is also known as the Caspian red deer. The name "maral" stuck after males of this species were observed to become more feisty during mating season while consuming the plant. Other names for maral include leuzea root, Russian leuzea, leuzea, Rhaponticum, and Cnicus carthamoides. Its scientific name is Rhaponticum carthamoides.
According to several websites on herbal phytocompounds, the short perennial shrub belongs to the Asteraceae family and can live for at least 75 years. Native to the Siberian region, it has been used in Chinese and Eastern folk medicines. Parts of Asia, not just Russia, were considered Siberian, which may explain its use in traditional medicine.
