Rhamnus purshiana is a shrub native to western North America. Its bark is processed for medicinal purposes. Cascara contains an organic plant compound called Hydroxanthracene Derivatives.
Since the 1890s, Cascara has been listed on the United States Pharmacopoeia, which contains standards for drugs and supplements. It has received preliminary approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use as an over-the-counter (OTC) laxative to treat constipation. However, due to concerns about long-term safety and a lack of studies on its effectiveness, the FDA withdrew its approval in November 2002.
