Green tea extract is the active ingredient extracted from green tea leaves, mainly including tea polyphenols , catechins, aromatic oils, theanine, theaflavin, etc. Green tea extract polyphenols have the functions of anti-oxidation, scavenging free radicals, etc., significantly reducing the serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in hyperlipidemia, and at the same time have the effect of restoring and protecting vascular endothelial function. The hypolipidemic effect of tea polyphenols is also one of the main reasons why tea can make obese people lose weight without rebounding. As a natural antioxidant, green tea extract polyphenols have been widely used in the food industry.

Green Tea Extract

Green tea, a staple in Asian cultures, has long been hailed for its health benefits. A recent study by Tomonori Nagao, Tadashi Hase, and Ichiro Tokimitsu published in Obesity magazine in 2007 adds significant scientific weight to these traditional beliefs. The research focused on investigating the effects of a green tea extract (GTE) rich in catechins on reducing body fat and cardiovascular risks in humans with visceral fat-type obesity.

The study recruited Japanese men and women with visceral obesity and randomly assigned them to either a catechin-rich green tea group or a control group with a significantly lower catechin content. After a 12-week double-blind parallel multicenter trial, the researchers found that the catechin group experienced greater reductions in body weight, body fat, waist circumference, and other obesity-related parameters. Moreover, they also observed a more significant decrease in systolic blood pressure and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels in the catechin group.

Catechins: The Key Ingredient

Catechins, a class of polyphenols found abundantly in green tea, are the active ingredients behind its beneficial effects. The high concentration of catechins in the GTE used in this study was crucial in achieving the observed results. Catechins are known to enhance fat oxidation, boost metabolism, and improve cardiovascular health.

Body Fat Reduction

The study showed that the catechin group experienced significantly greater reductions in body weight, body fat mass, waist circumference, and other measures of obesity. This indicates that catechin-rich green tea extract can aid in weight loss and body fat reduction, especially in individuals with visceral obesity.

Safety and Side Effects

Importantly, the study did not report any adverse effects associated with the continuous ingestion of the catechin-rich green tea extract. This suggests that it is a safe and effective way to reduce body fat and improve cardiovascular health.

The study by Nagao, Hase, and Tokimitsu provides compelling evidence that a green tea extract high in catechins can effectively reduce body fat and cardiovascular risks in humans. The key ingredient, catechins, not only aids in weight loss but also improves cardiovascular health by reducing blood pressure and LDL cholesterol levels. With its safety profile and multiple health benefits, catechin-rich green tea extract is a promising addition to any weight loss or heart health regimen.

Cardiovascular Health Improvement

The study also found that the catechin group had a more significant decrease in systolic blood pressure and LDL cholesterol levels. These are key factors in reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases like heart attacks and strokes. By improving blood pressure and lipid profiles, catechin-rich green tea extract can contribute to a healthier heart.
